The holiday season is a time for relaxation and enjoyment, but it's also unfortunately often a time of medical emergencies, particularly as South Africans take to the roads to reach their holiday destinations.
Members on Standard Options (Gold Focus and Platinum Focus), Saver Options (Gold Saver and Platinum Saver) and Complete Options (Titan and Platinum Complete) have access to our Casualty Benefit, which provides cover for emergency room visits. The cover will pay for the facility fee and any consultations associated with your admission to the emergency room or casualty ward of a registered casualty facility.

Until 2009, the National Health Reference Price List (NHRPL) was a list of benchmark tariffs published by the National Department of Health and used be medical schemes to set their reimbursement rate. In 2010 the NHRPL was declared anti-competitive and was done away with.
This meant that medical schemes needed to set their own tariffs. Most used the 2009 NHRPL as a basis for their own tariff rate and have increased this each year with an inflationary increase. Liberty Medical Scheme consults with a range of experts including Liberty Health, the National Department of Health and LMS actuaries, and references certain economic indicators to arrive at the LMS Rate. Because medical costs increase every year, we determine the LMS rate for every single benefit on an annual basis.
