Adding value
LMS has recently instituted a Health Initiative, which is open to Scheme members as well as the general public, with the intention of providing you with health information in order to educate you about common chronic conditions. Members are thereby empowered to act proactively to prevent, or reduce the severity of, what could become life-threatening conditions.
The pilot screening in the Health Initiative programme took place at various Ster-Kinekor theatres nationally, on the 25th March and dealt with the topic of Breast Cancer. Owing to the success of this screening, LMS will officially launch the Initiative with a screening on cardiovascular conditions on the 3rd of June. Two more episodes about other chronic conditions will follow later in the year.

Get access to resource centre
During the month of May we celebrate mothers all over South Africa, but new and expectant moms get year-round support from Liberty Medical Scheme through the Liberty Baby programme. A dedicated website, www.libmedbaby.co.za, provides moms with a one-stop information and resource centre. Here they can calculate their due date, read up on all aspects of maternity, pregnancy and birth, as well as infant care, family matters and how to stimulate their baby. The website includes useful links to baby and maternity-related suppliers.
In addition, moms and pregnant women get access to fantastic special offers. Some of these latest offers include free samples of Nativa Mom2B pregnancy shakes, and discounts on any purchase of these products.
 |
Members also receive a 10% discount off all4aKid safety product purchases made online via the 4aKid website www.4akid.co.za. These include Wonderwedge, Tummy Ties, Child Locators, Mommy I'm Here Alert, Infobands, 4aKid Child Safety Harnesses, Secure-A-Kid, and 4aKid Child Safety Wrist Straps. |
Bio-Oil® is also giving away samples and information booklets on pregnancy stretch marks (and how to avoid them), and included in the Maternity bag will be a special white A6 photo album designed especially to fit the scan images during your pregnancy.

Supporting ethical and professional behaviour
As a medical scheme, we recognise the need to keep costs as low as possible for the benefit of our members, and we therefore monitor and reduce costs wherever possible on an ongoing basis.
Unfortunately, fraud and wastage contribute to the loss of around R7bn to R10bn each year, and this contributes significantly to the high cost of private healthcare. This is clearly not a sustainable situation and it is one that, ultimately directly impacts on the pockets of you, the member. |
 |
We believe that we have an obligation to our members to deal with fraud decisively and to recover any monies that are lost due to fraud and abuse – this money in fact belongs to the members who contribute to the Scheme. We are also legally required, in terms of the Medical Schemes Act, to recoup such monies.
This may include entering into mediation meetings with members to recoup monies gained through fraudulent activities. We do not condone extortion or any illegal action by medical schemes.
We are aided and supported by the Board of Healthcare Funders' Forensic Management Unit (FMU). It was established to ensure that all investigations into fraud and abuse are conducted in an ethical, transparent and legal manner. All participants of the FMU are required to report matters to the relevant authority where there is a legal obligation to do so.
We also support the Health Professions Council of South Africa's (HPCSA) commitment to ensure that all practitioners conduct their practices ethically, professionally and with dignity. We urge our members to reconcile their monthly statements to assure that the released benefits were for legitimate and valid claims and that the services were indeed rendered. Any irregularity or suspicion of fraud must be reported either anonymously to 0800 21 26 38 or by emailing to fraud@liberty.co.za. |
